Escalating abuse
This is a tough piece to discuss because it is so vulnerable and personal. I'm not entirely sure what I think about it, other than I am happy the author is no longer with her ex and that she has found someone who treats her well.
The thing that strikes me about this piece is that the author does not identify her ex husband as abusive until very late in the story--well after she had met her new partner, who became her second husband.
The other thing I noticed is that the author was doing so much to protect the ex-husband from the consequences of not allowing her to go to the bathroom. She brings cups to pee in on long drives. She picks him up from the airport and is covered in pee because she was afraid to be late, and when he insists on getting in the driver's seat, she refuses because she doesn't want him to sit in her pee.
It makes me wonder what else the ex was doing to make it so she felt she couldn't assert any personal boundaries.
