Some general notes on this
This is one of those articles where neither of us WilderNet admins quite knows what to say about it, which I think makes it a very valuable contribution to the site. So I'm going to make a few comments here, but they are a bit out of order and not particularly insightful.
The writing is gripping and very evocative, but there are a few insanely disturbing scenes in it, particularly the part where her friend confesses to something so grotesque and almost sinister I don't even want to write it out.
Since the article was written right in the aftermath of the abortion, we don't know how the author feels about it now. However, she is active on Twitter and since this was written she is now married with a baby.
As someone who grew up in a very urban, liberal area, there are very few stories of abortion grief that I have encountered. It is almost taboo to talk about women who might grieve or have trauma after an abortion. Nuance is really missing from the abortion discussion, especially in liberal circles.
One thing that struck both of us (the admins) is how flippant the author is about the abortion at the beginning of the story. Meanwhile, her body is screaming at her not to get it, which she ignores. As an aside, I think that sometimes people develop trauma responses because they ignore what their bodies are telling them. The body remembers trauma because you didn't honor the warning signals it was sending you.
I realize that abortion is a touchy subject for many people and this story in particular will likely be controversial no matter where you stand on the issue. The goal of this site is to share unique perspectives that make you think, not necessarily ones you agree with.
