City girl here
I have only ever lived in mid-sized cities. In school it was always implicitly communicated to us how lucky we were to live in a place that wasn't in the middle of nowhere, where people valued education, and where you could always find good jobs. By "good" jobs, that meant white collar work in front of computers in an office space.
Then 2020 happened, and suddenly you could theoretically work anywhere. You could take zoom calls for meetings, send quick slack messages if you had a quick question. And you could do laundry during your lunch hour, save time commuting, save money on going out for lunch. You didn't need "business clothes."
The only real downside is if you were early career stage and needed mentoring. Or, if you were new at the company and needed to be oriented.
Today, the cost of living in my mid-sized city has gone up considerably, and shows no signs of slowing down. As someone who is a serial entrepreneur, this is a major issue. So I have been entertaining ideas of moving to a smaller town, where commercial space and rent is a bit cheaper. With the modern technology that we have, there are fewer and fewer compelling reasons for me to stay in my current city.
