Respect to the troll game 🧌

Interesting piece, but also strangely mechanical and sort of obtuse analyzing cultural norms in depth when source of people’s response is obvious.

Directly stating how much her husband makes, that their house is paid off, that she has college savings for her kids, etc and then stating a primary reason for continuing to work is to have time away from her young kids is incredibly obnoxious lol.

All of the cultural analysis that came after makes her seem almost alien for not immediately recognizing and owning the brazenness of her twitter post.

A man making a post saying his wife makes half a million a year and that he chooses to work to have time away from the kids would get similarly flamed.

The cultural analysis seems reasonable in isolation, but absurd when paired with the opening observing the response to her obvious troll-bait post.

Anyone who leads with "My husband makes 500-750k per year" knows what they're doing.

I'm actually not sure if a man would be scrutinized in a similar way. This is one of those places where double standards about male and female income is surprisingly hard to shake. Whenever I've known a couple where the woman is the exceptionally successful breadwinner, the implicit question is: What does he bring to the table then? There's a lot of rationalization and explanation with successful woman-SAHD that you don't get when it is the more common successful male breadwinner - SAHM pairing.

I think the main trigger point is the admission "I want to get away from my kids." That is one of those taboo things that you are just not supposed to admit outside of your therapist's office. That holds true for both men and women.
