😱 Tay-Tay slay-slay!
My most unpopular opinion is about Taylor Swift
This might be sacrilegious for a millennial woman the same age as Taylor Swift, but I have always struggled to understand why she has such a devoted following. Her music is fine, but sonically it always seems to be playing it safe, and lyrically there is almost always at least one line that completely takes me out of the song. This line is probably my least favorite in her discography: "I pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibes." Ugh. I just can't.
It's not that I don't understand being petty or indignant about a disappointing relationship, but this piece makes me wonder if my inability to connect with Taylor has more to do with her worldview than with the music itself. The idea of being a newlywed and writing songs about all of her "haters" just feels unnecessarily gratuitous to me. It also just makes me feel sad for her -- at the height of her wealth, fame, and in theory, personal happiness, she's still writing these very resentful, bitter songs.
That said, 1989 came out at a very formative time in my life and I have many fond memories of driving around the California countryside with Blank Space on the radio. And it's hard not to respect her discipline and business acumen.
