Anyone else read Persepolis in high school?
It is a testament to how strong an artistic work Persepolis is that even though the last time I read it almost 20 years ago, there are many moments in the story that I recall vividly.
- When her uncle is imprisoned and sentenced to be executed, he asks to see Marjane as his dying wish
- Young Marjane buying black market punk cassettes
- Marjane not wanting to get in trouble with the modesty police so she misdirects them by accusing an innocent man of harassing her. Later she recounts this story to her grandmother who angrily admonishes her.
- Marjane is sent away to Europe (I can't remember where) by her parents for her safety. While in Europe Marjane ends up homeless for a while and almost dies of pneumonia that she contracts from exposure. It's hard for me to imagine parents just letting their teenage daughter live abroad without checking in more regularly - although I have forgotten what all of the circumstances around this incident were.
- Marjane's mother freaking out at her that the Iranian regime would rape virgins before executing them so they wouldn't go to heaven.
