Love this trend. What do you all think of it?

This is such a tangential pet peeve but the word "foid" grates on me because I associate it with basement dwellers, ie incels. I can't even read it without one of my eyes starting to twitch, which I suppose is the intention.

But the word "Malfoid" is hilarious

Other than that the concept is not that new, a couple of the most popular ships in the HP fanfic world are "Drarry" and "Dramione" and these have been around for decades

My questions on this are:
Why is gender-bending fanfic is so popular? Why do people ship characters together like they are randomly combining them?

I somehow had never heard the word “foid” before this trend.

I’m not really sure why people change genders of characters and ship them. I’d guess it has something to do with the existing non-romantic relationship dynamic being interesting to people in a romantic relationship, and so using the two characters with a known dynamic allows people who make webcomics to shorthand it.

Everyone knows Malfoy and Potter are enemies. It doesn’t need to be explained and everyone has a visceral feeling of the animosity. The webcomic author can leverage that to make a enemies-to-lovers comic with no background explanation needed, but also in a kind of absurd and funny way.

Lol I actually learned that "foid" is short for "femoid" from Jk Rowling's mystery novel The Ink Black Heart. I only recently started seeing it pop up a lot in the last year or so.

Most fanfiction is sexy scenes between different characters. There are definitely fan fiction writers who are trying to improve their writing by using characters/worlds that are pre-built so to speak, but a good chunk of it is erotica about your favorite characters. (No judgement from me).
