Fanfiction trains people to romanticize disturbing things
It's very interesting to me that the fanfiction world is overwhelmingly people with very progressive, "woke" values. Keep in mind that JKRowling is like a four letter word in these communities. It is not uncommon to see a disclaimer at the beginning of a Harry Potter fanfic about how much the author hates Rowling for her opinions on gender.
Yet, the fanfiction stories that gain traction -- like this Draco X Hermione X The Handmaid's Tale retelling--often romanticize sexual abuse and slavery. Another example of this is the Omegaverse. If you want to know what the Omegaverse is, I will leave that exercise up to the reader.
Obviously, people enjoy exploring taboo topics, especially in erotica. But something is very messed up when people start equating sexual violence with love, even when it is "just" fiction.
