Partyin', partyin' yeah!

Now that I've gotten Rebecca Black's song "Friday" out of my system, I want to talk about how much I love parties.

I love having people over for dinner, going to other people's houses, and just hanging out with a small group of friends over a glass of wine. That is to say, I love all that in theory.

In practice, throwing parties is a ton of effort. For a while I was trying to having small dinner parties once every 6 weeks or so. But it just became exhausting. I would clean my whole house, shop, cook dinner, set the table and by the time my guests arrived, I was ready to switch on Netflix and binge watch The Office.

It is a lot easier if you are throwing parties as a couple. I've tried this one time where I had everyone go to my boyfriend's house. But that introduces another set of logistical issues -- how do you bring all of the food over to someone's house? If you have to do last minute cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen, now you are scrambling around to find out where they keep their spatulas.

Not sure what the solution is. Maybe just throwing potlucks is better.

Agreed, I enjoy those sorts of events a lot too. I’m in a small apartment and don’t really have room to host, so tend to go out to restaurants or a bar with people instead. Then the tradeoff is that it is very expensive and excludes people who don’t want to either pay or be in a potentially loud environment.

I’m not sure why it feels so hard to just meet up with people regularly.

At least with a bar, once half the people bail at the last minute, there are randos to talk with I guess.

Yeah small living spaces definitely plays a big role here. When my parents were my age, they and all of their friends had houses with adequate dining room and living room space to entertain.

The other thing is a lot of people don't know how to cook, or are very insecure about their cooking skills. It's kind of hard to ask people to bring food to your house when they lead with "Idk how to cook." lol.
