Do we infantilize young adults with language?

Phrases like "girl math" and "girl dinner" are funny but it also seems to be a symptom of how society increasingly treats young adults like children.

I remember being in my late teens and wanting to be able to make adult decisions for myself. It is a strange reversal that so many people now want to extend their adolescence well into their late 20s or even early 30s.

Why is this? Is it the economy (which is what I always blame for societal problems)? Curious to hear thoughts.
