Dear John letters, military culture, and infidelity

I'm not in the military and I don't know many people who have been in the military. But it seems like everything I read about military involves someone cheating at some point. Yet, this is also a demographic that seems more likely to be religious conservatives.

Any thoughts here? Am I misreading the culture?
